A free seven-week small-group series

for The Weight of God: How to Believe by Matthew Wong

When the New Testament says “believe”, the word underneath is pistis. In the first century it meant putting your full weight on someone.

Seven sessions, seven simple pictures, one question. Leader guides and participant sheets are all here to download and copy for your group.

01The series

What it is, and who it’s for

Most of us were taught that to believe is to agree that something is true. The people who first heard the gospel heard something bigger: trust you lean your whole life on.

This series walks a group through that idea over seven weeks, alongside the book The Weight of God: How to Believe by Matthew Wong. Each session takes one picture from the book, such as a roof that gave way, a child asleep on her father’s chest or a mustard seed in good soil, and sets it beside the Scriptures. Each week comes back to the same question: where is your weight?

There’s no new doctrine and no agenda. It’s written so any church can use it.

02The sessions

04How it runs

Seventy-five minutes, the same shape each week

Every session follows one rhythm, so your group settles into it by week two. The times are a guide: if a conversation is going somewhere good, let it run.

  1. OpenA light question to get everyone talking.
    10 min
  2. The ideaThe picture for the week, with a line from the book.
    15 min
  3. Read togetherOne or two passages, read aloud.
    10 min
  4. Talk about itFour or five questions, each with a note for the leader.
    25 min
  5. This weekOne small practice to try before you meet again.
    5 min
  6. PraySimple and unhurried.
    5 min

A book per person is recommended. The guides work on their own, but the series is much richer when everyone can read the chapters between sessions. One per couple works too.

05For leaders

You don’t need to be an expert

You only need to be willing to ask the question with your group, and to answer it yourself. Start with the leader’s introduction (two pages). It covers what the series is about, how to run a session and how to care for people well.

  1. Read ahead. Go through the leader guide and the chapters it points to a day or two before you meet.
  2. Ask, then wait. Silence after a question feels long to you and normal to everyone else.
  3. Host, don’t lecture. The leader notes are background for you, not a script to read out.
  4. Welcome honest doubt. Someone saying “I’m not sure where my weight is” is the point of the series.
  5. Finish on time. People come back to groups that respect their evenings.

This series asks people to look at what they’re standing on, and for some that thing has already given way. Listen, don’t rush to fix, and follow up privately.

06For your church

Running it church-wide?

Many churches pair the series with a Sunday. Matthew offers a free guest message that opens the same question, and he’ll post a free copy of the book to any pastor or church leader who’d like to read it first.

The question under every session

Where is your weight?

Seven weeks, one question, and a book for everyone in the room.
